Australian Shiraz & Shiraz blends

Due to a dearth of New World tastings in recent years, (which some might consider perfectly understandable and, indeed, laudable) your Committee  acted to address the situation and we started 2011 with a tasting of Australian Shiraz and Shiraz blend wines. We took a calculated risk by sourcing wines from the decade of the 1990s in order to assess whether these wine styles developed complexity over time in the cellar were capable of challenging mature wines from the classic areas of Europe in terms of development and interest.  The cellars of three members were plundered to assemble the following  list of wines:

Tyrrells Vat 11 Shiraz 1998 (Hunter Valley)
Tyrrells Vat 5 Shiraz 1998 (Hunter Valley)
D’Arenberg Dead Arm Shiraz 1998 (McLaren Vale)
Lindemans Limestone Ridge Shiraz/Cabernet 1996 (Coonawarra)
Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet/Shiraz 1998 (multi-region)
Jim Barry The Armagh Shiraz 1995, 1996 & 1998 (Clare Valley)
St Hallett Old Block Shiraz 1998 (Barossa Valley)
Peter Lehmann Stonewell Shiraz 1998 (Barossa Valley)
Barossa Valley Estates E&E Black Pepper Shiraz 1992 (Barossa Valley)

The tasting venue was the Morgan Hotel, Fleet Street, Dublin 2, and was presented by David Rorke.
